Detailed Trip InformationX
From The Village down to Zero Point Dam takes less than 3 hours,
and is class 2-4, mostly class 3, with one compulsory portage.
From Stage 4 hydro station down to the dam near Byrnihut. This is
a full day trip and is class 4-5, and is considered one of the best
runs in India.
Or just paddle at the village, doing laps. There is a big starting
ramp which was built for the Megha Kayak Fest 2016, when we hosted a
number of top international extreme kayakers, featuring Adidas
Sickline winner, Aniol Serrasolses.
The three main extreme kayak destinations for Meghalaya are the
Kynshi, Kopili and the Umtrew, and there are many others. Meghalaya
is truly one of the top extreme kayaking destinations in the world.
A comprehensive guide book is being prepared for publishing by our UK
friends, we will have that available when it is ready.
We are situated right on the banks of the Umtrew River, one of the
premier extreme kayaking rivers easily accessible for day trips. The
water is released daily from the hydro station, though the timings are
irregular, there is usually good water levels most days.
The rapids at the Village are class 2-4. The main rapids are
separated by pools so it's very safe, and there's something for
everyone, from beginner to the elite. The main rapid is very
challenging, we call it Terminator. At the lower end of the Village
is the Ski Jump rapid, which everyone enjoys, and it's one of the
most beautiful stretches of river anywhere.
There is a natural river pool in the adjacent connecting stream which
is very good for swimming or for learning to roll.
